and articulated and operationalized values become one of the
most important ingredients for change and transformation.
In a landmark study of
long-lasting, outperforming, and visionary companies,
Jim
Collins and Jerry Porras identified something
fundamental that all such companies share: the presence of a
core ideology, which rarely, if ever wavered in the
lifetimes of these companies (which are about a century old
at an average). These organizations were not stagnant
companies: in fact, they were often the leaders in
experimenting and embracing change, but while they were
happy to modify their strategies and operating practices,
they never altered their essential core. These companies,
which include the likes of 3M, HP, Johnson&Johnson,
Motorola, and Walt Disney haven’t merely outperformed the
general markets 15 times, but have even outperformed a
benchmark group of other well-performing, but non-visionary
companies by 6 times.
So why is the Organization
DNA Workshop so important?
Because, contrary to popular thinking, companies are not
built as vehicles for products or services or ideas or
people. Because, the company is the raison d’etre. Because
visionary and high-performing companies ultimately outlast
their founders, their original ideas, their original
products – everything. And they last, and they thrive,
because they have the structures and the rules – the DNA –
which allow them to go on, and on, and on.
